MembersOwn recently received reports from members regarding potential scams involving spoofing.
Scammers are impersonating MembersOwn’s Fraud Detection Department via text messages and phone calls to steal sensitive information.
We’re here to help you stay informed and protect yourself.
What is Spoofing?
Spoofing is when scammers disguise their phone number or Caller ID to appear as though they are contacting you from a trusted organization like MembersOwn Credit Union. These fraudsters are also sending fake text messages to impersonate us.
How Spoofing Works
- Deceptive Texts or Calls: Fraudsters may claim there’s an issue with your account or mention suspicious transactions to create urgency.
- Request for Sensitive Information: They might ask for your full card number, CVV code, PIN, multi-factor authentication (MFA) code, or other private details.
- Impersonation Tactics: They may use MembersOwn’s name, phone number, or Caller ID to appear legitimate.
Remember: MembersOwn Credit Union will never ask for sensitive information like your full debit card number, PIN, CVV code, or MFA code via text or phone calls.
Watch for These Red Flags
- The Fraud Detection Department communications will never come from our phone number (402.436.5365).
- The Fraud Department will never ask for more than the last four digits of your debit card.
- The Fraud Department will never ask for the PIN for the debit card.
- The Fraud Department will never ask or need access to your online account.
- The Fraud Department will not offer to “help” with digital wallets, PayPal, or other debit or credit cards other than the one they are calling about.
- The Fraud Department will never request that you send funds to anyone else in the attempt to “protect your account” via Apple Pay, Google Pay, etc.
Tips to Stay Safe
- Verify the Sender or Caller: If you’re suspicious of a text or call, don’t engage. Hang up and call MembersOwn directly at 402.436.5365. Do not use any numbers or links provided in the suspicious message.
- Be Cautious with Text Messages: Fraud alerts from MembersOwn will only come from our fraud department. These messages will never ask for more than the last four digits of your debit card.
- Never Share Secure Access Codes: MembersOwn does not authenticate calls or texts by asking for your MFA codes. If someone asks for this code, it’s a scam.
By staying vigilant you can protect your information from spoofing and fraud attempts.
Thank you for being a valued member of the MembersOwn family.
