MembersOwn Impact Statement
March 4, 2020 | News
Our President, Linda Carter, visited our nation’s capital to attend the Credit Union National Administration’s Governmental Affairs Conference along with other credit union professionals from across the United States. We were challenged with leaving behind a document with our congressional delegation highlighting our credit union’s impact on our community and how we rise to meet our members’ diverse needs.
MembersOwn Credit Union is a state-charted credit union in Lincoln serving 10 counties in southeast Nebraska (Lancaster, Gage, Jefferson, Saline, Seward, Saunders, Cass, Otoe, Johnson and Pawnee). We have 8,443 members and assets of $100,053,626. We employee 25 people between our two branches in Lincoln and Beatrice. We have been proudly serving members in this area for 84 years.
In 2019, MembersOwn was able to reward our members with a year-end interest rebate and bonus dividend of over $200,000. As a not-for-profit cooperative, we had a good financial year and wanted to give back to our members. Being able to show them that we are reliable, trustworthy stewards of their money and make sound financial decisions as an institution is key. Bonus dividends and interest rebates are one way we have to say thank you to our members for making us your financial institution of choice. We want them to know that we’re in this together, and the more members use the credit union, the more opportunity for earning they have!
Year-end was an opportune time for members to receive unexpected extra money in their accounts. We had many members excited to have some money in their pocket after the holidays. Some even were moved to tears.
We spoke to one of our members, Clyde, who expressed excitement when he found out about the interest rebate that had been deposited to his savings account. Clyde told us that MembersOwn is like no other financial institution out there. When he learned of the interest rebate program and saw the bonus in his account, he was astounded.
“MembersOwn is totally different. They deal with people, not accounts. Personal service is number one and they care for me. It’s not just a window you drive up to. Everyone in there, even the people in the back, are working on my behalf and have my back, too.”
While most members spent their interest rebates on treating themselves, Clyde chose to turn around and make an extra payment on his truck. “I started out not so great, and my credit score wasn’t the best.” Originally Clyde came to MembersOwn for an auto loan, and at the time didn’t even have a checking account. With guidance and advice from our Lending Specialist Colleen, Clyde’s been working to improve his credit and financial situation. Now, Clyde has a checking account with a MembersOwn debit card in his wallet and has increased his credit score by 100 points.
MembersOwn takes pride in serving the Southeast Nebraska communities we call home.
